Fifth Grade Key Learning Targets

Clarkston School District (CSD) strives to provide opportunities for students to meet their full potential. Students must develop the ability to be independent thinkers. They must learn to solve real-life problems and keep up with latest developments. This curriculum summary identifies key learning targets that represent the skills and knowledge required in each classroom to meet the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements at this grade level.

Character Education

CSD believes that values education is central to the personal growth and development of its students. It helps prepare them to meet the complex challenges of a rapidly changing world. The district further believes the following common values are essential to the character of an educated person. The school must model, teach and reinforce these values:

Communication

Communication develops at different rates and is used in all aspects of life.  The fifth grade student in CSD works on using listening and observation skills.

• Focuses attention.

The fifth grade student in CSD works on communicating ideas clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.

• Develops content and ideas.

The student in CSD works on using communication strategies and skills to work effectively with others.

• Works cooperatively as a member of a group.

Reading

The fifth grade student in the CSD strives to understand and use different strategies and skills to read fluently.

• Uses text to read words.
• Uses phonics in reading.
• Reads aloud with fluency and expression.
• Uses structural analysis to interpret meaning of unknown vocabulary.
• Uses structure of sentence to determine unknown words.

The fifth grade student in the CSD strives to understand the meaning of what is read.

• Paraphrases and summarizes the sequence of a story.
• Compares and contrasts complex story elements.
• Identifies and analyzes cause and effect.
• Reads text independently.
• Recognizes different types of text forms: ballads, haiku, science fiction, and editorials.

The fifth grade student in the CSD works on reading different materials for various purposes.

• Reads science and social studies texts.
• Understands bibliography and reference lists.
• Follows complex written directions.
• Utilizes primary and secondary sources in preparing a report.
• Application in content areas.
• Creates quesitons and evaluations.

The fifth grade student in the CSD works on setting goals and evaluating progress to improve reading.

Written Language

Learning to write brings the learner into the literate community as an active participant.  The fifth grade student in the CSD works on writing clearly and effectively.

• Edits and demonstrates use of punctuation in the greeting of a business letter and quotation marks for a split sentence.
• Identifies and uses subjects and predicates.
• Underlines magazine and journal titles.
• Writes sentences containing comparative and superlative forms of adjectives.
• Alphabetizes any group of words.

The fifth grade student in the CSD utilizes the writing process.

• Writes clear directions for accomplishing ordinary tasks.
• Writes a letter of request and a letter of thanks.
• Writes reports citing various sources.
• Explains personal writing process.

The fifth grade student in the CSD works toward understanding and using the writing process.

• Views technology as an important part of learning.
• Locates adverbs in literacy selections.
• Writes legibly in cursive.

The fifth grade student in the CSD works toward analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of written work.

Mathematics

The fifth grade student in the CSD understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics.

Number Sense

• Reads, writes, and compares numbers through nine digits and decimals to thousandths.
• Demonstrates the meaning of commutative, associative, and identify property.
• Readily recalls multiplication facts to twelve.
• Readily recalls division facts to twelve.
• Multiplies using three-digit numbers.
• Divides using four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.
• Adds/subtracts fractions with like denominators to 1/16 and multiply/divide to 1/8.
• Compares fractions, percents, and decimals.
• Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides decimals to thousandths.

Measurement

• Works with metric units for length and volume.
• Determines area and perimeter of irregular two dimensionals.
• Understands basic Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales.

Geometric Sense

• Classifies geometric shape by attribute.
• Constructs simple shapes using a straight edge, compass, and protractor.

Probability/Statistics

• Explores probability with certain and uncertain events.

Algebraic Sense

• Converts table and graph information into various formats.
• Recognizes, sequences, and extends pattern transformation.\

Calculator Use

• Describes math uses in various careers and everyday life.

Science

Our science curriculum is under review. We are updating goals and choosing materials to teach the following concepts at this grade level.

Clarkston’s Science Program focuses on Earth, Life and Physical Sciences at each grade level. Through the study of specific topics at each grade level, students will gain a breadth of knowledge and develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry.

The following topics have been selected at this grade level.

Simple Machines, Sound/Light, Migration of Animals, Plant Life Processes, Intro to Genetics-HIV, Growing Up, Geology—Rock Cycles/Fossils, Weather, Constellations and NASA Research.

Social Studies

Social studies provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to participate as responsible and effective citizens in an increasingly complex world.  The fifth grade student in CSD develops an understanding of major events, turning points, chronology, and the cause and effect relationships among them in U.S. history through the Civil War period.

• Examines historical contributions of various individuals and cultures to U.S. History through the Civil War period.

• Understands historical perspective: what happened in the past impacts the present and future.
• Understands that historical events may be interpreted from multiple perspectives.
• Uses information and a variety of resources to investigate and understand history.
• Understands the impact of the technology, ideas, and creativity on U.S. history and social change.

The fifth grade student in CSD begins to develop a stronger sense of the impact of the environment on country’s choices.

• Recognizes the impact of environment on the United States.
• Shows responsibility in caring for the nation’s environment.
• Identifies how technology impacts the United States.

The fifth grade student in CSD continues to develop an understanding of the influences of continuity and change.

• Understands our country is always growing and changing (migration).
• Recognizes changes influence national choices.
• Identifies how past and present choices influence the future of the United States (emerging cultures).

The fifth grade student in CSD strives to understand how people participate in making decisions for the United States.

• Begins to understand the structure and processes of national government.
• Practices appropriate processes and responsibilities of good citizenship.
• Expands the understanding that rules impact safety, order, and harmony nationally.

The fifth grade student in CSD continues to develop an understanding of the principles of economics.

• Understands that work is rewarding.
• Develops an understanding of past economic systems of the United States.
• Expands their understanding that economic choices involve costs and consequences.
• Compares and contrasts the impact of past business market on the United States.
• Begins to examine how government policies influence national economy.

The fifth grade student in CSD continues to develop an understanding of geographical concepts.

• Identifies areas of a map or globe (i.e. longitude, latitude, prime meridian).
• Creates regional maps of the United States.
• Continues to develop a working knowledge of states, capitals, major cities, rivers, and mountain ranges.
• Uses geographic tools (compass rose, map legends, atlases & globes).
• Begins to use technological tools in geographical research.

Music

Music is an essential part of the curriculum of the Clarkston School District. The objective of music education is to provide each student with meaningful knowledge and skills to empower them to be involved in music throughout their life.

The major goals of music education in CSD include:

• to develop self-discipline and a positive self-image.
• to broaden student’s sensitivity to their own and other cultural heritages.
• learn appropriate social behavior in group situations.
• provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in music.
• provide an opportunity for students to display their musical knowledge and skills through performances.

Health & Wellness

The fifth grade student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy, active life: movement, physical fitness, and nutrition.

Understands how to have healthy interactions with others.

• Knows the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships.
• Knows the differences between enhancing and destructive behaviors (asking vs. manipulation, negotiating vs. punitive, enabling vs. honesty).
• Knows how family and friends influence our behavior and choices (personal and health).
• Makes choices based on personal needs, not on the undue influence of others.
• Knows the benefits and responsibilities of healthy friendships.
• Develops strategies for refusing, getting out of situations, and standing up to others.

Understands nutritional information and eating habits.

• Finds and reads information contained on food package labels.
• Knows how family, friends, and personal lifestyle affect food selection, eating habits, and eating disorders.
• Describes how our nutritional needs are met by what we eat, including food groups.
• Makes responsible eating choices.
• Prevents food borne illness.

Understands the relationship between personal lifestyle and physical fitness.

• Knows how regular physical exercise affects cardiovascular fitness.
• Knows how posture and injury prevention affect physical fitness.
• Knows how a knowledgeable and active lifestyle leads to lifelong physical fitness.
• Develops a personal physical fitness program.
• Manages various emergency situations.
• Knows various emergency situations (poison, accident, water, weather, fire, electrical).
• Develops emergency procedures for each situation.
• Practices procedures with others in school and at home.

Understands changes which occur in adolescence.

• Knows feelings which may accompany physical, social, and emotional changes of adolescence.
• Knows the process of puberty, including menstruation and personal hygiene changes,.
• Knows the consequences of sexual harassment and how to avoid harassing others.
• Develops a personal hygiene program.

Understands and develops strategies for resisting mood-altering drugs (DARE).

• Knows various types of mood-altering drugs.
• Knows the short- and long-term effects of using mood-altering drugs.
• Knows why people begin and continue taking these drugs, including tobacco.
• Develops strategies, including alternatives, for managing pressures to take drugs.

Understands the relationship between lifestyle choices and diseases.

• Knows how family and friends influence lifestyle choices.
• Knows how lifestyle choices can put you into or keep you from situations which increase the likelihood of contracting a disease (HIV, STDs)
• Knows effects of disease on family and personal relationships.
• Reviews of communicable diseases (head lice).

Physical Education

The fifth grade student in CSD applies physical education to life.

• Demonstrates physical fitness (coordination, endurance, nutrition, good attitude).
• Assesses physical fitness needs.
• Knows basics of individual and group sports and recreational activities (benefits, conditioning requirements, safety practices, responsibilities of participation, rules of activities).
• Manages personal health, wellness, and fitness needs (prevention and care of injuries, nutrition and diet, commitment necessary to gain and maintain fitness).
• Demonstrates sportsmanship in sports and recreation (value of winning and losing, united goal-setting, ground rules for team play, basic social and cooperative skills).
• Uses a variety of strategies to succeed in sports and recreational activities (recognize strengths and weaknesses, know value of repetition and practice).
• Demonstrates proper treatment of sports equipment (safety, care, storage, for intended purposes only).

The fifth grade student in CSD strives to gain knowledge and skills which enable and/or improve participation in group and team sports (i.e. basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball).

The fifth grade student in CSD strives to increase muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, body awareness, and agility through fitness and recreational activities.
