Elementary Alternative Education Opportunities  


The Clarkston School Parent Partnership Program supports both home-schooled families and students of families that have experienced difficulties in traditional school models.

The two programs described below are designed to provide quality educational opportunities and resources with a commitment to enhance learning goals and foster a sense of community while recognizing parental authority in regards to the educational direction of the student.

Both programs are taught by experienced, qualified educators representing from both the Clarkston School District staff and the community. Enrollment is open to any person who resides in the State of Washington (must provide an official U.S. Postal Service address). Enrollment is open to grades Kindergarten through grade eight. There are no costs associated with either program.

Both programs meet the standards and legal authority as stated in Washington Administrative Code 392-121-182 as well as Clarkston School District Board Policy.

Monday School

Monday School is a program designed specifically to support the home schooling family. Meeting each Monday for 5 hours, the current curriculum offers classes in Language Arts, Science, Art and physical education. Lunch is available as well as supervised breaks during the day.

In addition to the Monday School classes, the students, with help from the parent advisory group, plan and take educational appropriate field trips such as to the Palouse Discovery Science Center.

Families continue to provide the balance of the home-school curriculum of their choice and design. Families are eligible for financial reimbursement for approved materials used in their home-school curriculums that are included in their Core Student Learning Success Plan.

Alternative Center for Education

The Alternative Center for Education (ACE) is a five-day-a-week program that meets in the afternoons with certificated instructors concentrating on the core basic subjects of reading, writing and math. In addition to the required two hours per day attendance, each student is also held responsible for several hours of homework per day.

The ACE mission is to provide a specifically designed program for those students who voluntarily are seeking an alternative to a traditional classroom setting or who have not had success in a more traditional setting.  The program is designed to meet individual academic, social, emotional and physical needs.


Program objectives are to:                                                                 

  • Integrate lifeskills development within the curriculum.
  • Develop andimplement a curriculum in response to needs of the student population.
  • Provide appropriateassessment and support services.
  • Provide anenvironment that is conducive to learning.  
  • Have an effectivetransition process for students entering and exiting the program.
  • Provide a schoolenvironment that will enable the students to master life skills that arecritical to social, emotional and academic growth and success

Each student is on a contract to complete both the 10 hours per week in-class time and also the 15 hours per week home-planned learning activities. These learning activities are planned each day prior to their expected completion. Each student's contract and time schedule is individually tailored to meet their specific academic, social, emotional and physical needs.

The ACE is an optional program and a privilege. Students must: Be Prompt; Be Prepared; Be Polite; Have a Positive Mental Attitude and Participate.

Application to either of these programs can be made at the Grantham Elementary School office. Student intakes are required for those applying to the ACE.
