Dear Clarkston School District Families,

We are writing to share an important and exciting update about the future of 6th grade in our district. Beginning in the school year of 2027-28, 6th grade students will move from their elementary schools to Lincoln Middle School, creating a true 6th–8th grade middle school model. This gives us one year to plan and work out all the details to make this a successful transition.

This is a decision we have made thoughtfully, with your children at the center of every conversation.

Why this change, and why now?

Clarkston is currently one of the few districts in our state and region that has not transitioned to a 6–8 middle school model. Eighty-one percent of Washington State school districts have already made this shift because the research is clear: early adolescents thrive when they are in learning environments designed specifically for their developmental stage. Lincoln Middle School is that environment.

What does this mean for your child?

At Lincoln Middle School, your 6th grader will have access to specialized counselors and interventionists, competitive athletics, clubs and leadership opportunities, advanced math pathways, science labs, performance spaces, and more. Rather than being the oldest students in an elementary building, they will enter a system built intentionally to support students ages 11–14 — academically, socially, and emotionally.

Grade-level teams, advisory programs, and structured transition supports will be in place to ensure every student feels known, safe, and connected from day one.

What about the transition itself?

We know change can feel uncertain, especially for families with students who have been comfortable in their elementary schools. We are committed to making this transition smooth and supportive. Before the school year begins, we will create intentional opportunities for students to get familiar with Lincoln Middle School, meet their teachers, and build confidence in their new environment.

This is not simply moving a grade level. It is placing your child in a learning environment specifically designed for who they are right now and who they are becoming.

We are grateful for your trust and partnership. Additional information is available in the FAQ, and we welcome any questions you may have.

More information will be shared in the weeks ahead, and we welcome your questions.

Sincerely,

--Thaynan Knowlton
